A hit squad leader, who was once allied to El Chapo and whose gang was involved in a deadly war that left more than 10,000 people dead in northern Mexico, has been extradited to the United States.

Noel 'El Flaco' Salgueiro was taken into the custody of the FBI on Thursday and transferred to a jail in El Paso, Texas, on a narcotics conspiracy charge, according to the El Paso Times.

Salgueiro founded the ruthless Gente Nueva gang in 2007.

The group became an armed wing of the notorious Sinaloa Cartel and its then-leader Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman.

Under Salgueiro, who is accused of overseeing the cartel's operations in the state of Chihuahua, Gente Nueva took part in perhaps the most deadliest battle that pitted the Sinaloa Cartel against the rival Juárez Cartel.

The armed conflict over control of Juárez, a border town in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, made the city at one point the most dangerous town in the world between 2008-12.

The bloody turf war over drug routes into the United States left more than 10,000 people dead, including cartel members.

According to Mexican authorities, Salgueiro and his family were allegedly involved in trafficking 15 tons of marijuana and two tons of cocaine into the United States on a monthly basis.

Salgueiro and his group also were reportedly involved extorting, kidnapping and killing local businessmen and government officials.

El Flaco was arrested by Mexican security forces in October 2011. He was then replaced by Jose Antonio Marrufo as leader of the Gente Nueva.

Marrufo, who was also known as El Jaguar, was eventually captured as well in February 2012.

He was extradited to El Paso in May.
