JONES COUNTY, Iowa — The Iowa State Patrol says a child who was critically injured after being hit by an SUV while sledding earlier this month has died.
An updated crash report from the ISP says 13-year-old Adam McWherter was pronounced dead Saturday.
Ice rescue training taking place on Terra Lake this weekMcWherter was sledding on January 10 just northwest of Anamosa, in the 13000 block of Buffalo Road, when the incident happened. The ISP said McWherter was going downhill on the sled toward the west and was struck by an SUV on the road as the sled crossed in front of it.
Sgt. Alex Dinkla with the ISP said McWherter was transported to the hospital in critical condition. He died 10 days after the crash.
A search warrant application filed in the case said the driver of the SUV, 49-year-old David Thomas, told the Iowa State Patrol he saw movement coming from the driveway as he approached and hit his brakes but couldn’t stop in time to avoid hitting the boy. His SUV continued sliding after the collision and ended up in the ditch.
The ISP is continuing to investigate.
